Reader Rock Garden 1
"William Reader, Superintendent of the City of Calgary’s Parks Department from 1913-1943, was a garden innovator. He was responsible for all of Calgary’s parks and cemeteries, the municipal nursery, the first municipal nursery and the first municipal golf course. His personal passion, however, was creating the “rockery” on the steep north slope of Cemetery Hill (just south of the Calgary Stamped…

Fog at the Cemetery
We walked around the Reader Rock Garden this morning, as well as walking the residential streets and alleys in the Rideau/Roxborough area. Good to see Wood Ducks on the River - my first ones for this year. Same with the Brown Creeper. The Union Cemetery is next to the Reader Rock Garden. Felt very different seeing this place in the fog.
"Calgary averages twenty days with fog each year. Half of these normally occur in the fall and half in the spring. Environment Canada does not list which month has the most days with fog." We seem to have had more days of fog and hoar frost this winter than what I remember from other winters, but maybe I just missed them before. I had asked my oldest daughter if she had any statistics for this - she didn't, so she e-mailed one of our Meteorologists, Paul Dunphy, and the info just above was in reply to her e-mail. Thanks, Fiona and Paul!
Turtlehead
This Turtlehead plant was at the Reader Rock Garden. A new one for me. When you squeeze the flower, it opens like a turtle's mouth.

Ruby red
Three of these deep red Peony blooms caught my eye on a recent visit to the Reader Rock Garden. This is the type of Peony that has fern-like/feathery leaves.
In their prime
These brightly coloured Tulips were growing at the Reader Rock Garden recently. And the sun was actually shining!
Grape Hyacinth
Was at the Reader Rock Garden this afternoon and there were all sorts of plants in bloom. This is a Grape Hyacinth - I liked the texture of the flower.
Imitation Northern Lights
When I saw the bokeh in this image, the Northern Lights went through my mind : ) Taken at Reader Rock Garden about a month ago. I just liked the yellow and green together. It has just started pouring with rain - and I have a walk to go on in about an hour and a half to see a possibly endangered wild Iris. Oh, and my daughter has just e-mailed me to warn me that there is a Tornado Watch in place for the Calgary area! Hmmm - interesting : ) And now, half an hour later, I see some blue sky ....
Orange Hawkweed
This is one of my favourite wildflowers (though this particular plant was growing at Reader Rock Garden). Also called Devil's-paintbrush. Introduced from Europe, it grows in waste areas, roadsides and lawns.
