Reader Rock Garden 1

"William Reader, Superintendent of the City of Calgary’s Parks Department from 1913-1943, was a garden innovator. He was responsible for all of Calgary’s parks and cemeteries, the municipal nursery, the first municipal nursery and the first municipal golf course. His personal passion, however, was creating the “rockery” on the steep north slope of Cemetery Hill (just south of the Calgary Stamped…  (read more)

Pink Papaver

I always love the centres of flowers, including Poppies. This giant pink Oriental Poppy was growing at the Reader Rock Garden.

White-tailed Jack Rabbit

This little guy, seen at Reader Rock Garden over two weeks ago, seemed to think that if he kept really, really still, we wouldn't be able to see him, LOL. Beautiful little thing.

Mock Strawberry fall leaves

I certainly never dreamed that there was more than one kind of Strawberry! This one was growing at the Reader Rock Garden near the Stampede Grounds. A few of the leaves were turning bright red. The fruit can be seen in another photo I am uploading at the same time as this one.

Wild Gooseberry

Gooseberry leaves are very small but, oh, what a vivid colour they turn in the fall. They are one of my favourite kinds of leaf. I used to tell myself that they were my imitation Maple leaves, but now I have seen a REAL Maple! Gooseberry berries are reddish purple. I felt very honoured when I was asked if I would be willing to let this image be used on Harvard University's website, ARKive. www.arkive.org/hawthorn-leaved-gooseberry/ribes-oxyacanth... "A vast treasury of wildlife images has been steadily accumulating over the past century, yet no one has known its full extent - or indeed its gaps - and no one has had a comprehensive way of gaining access to it. ARKive will put that right, and it will be an invaluable tool for all concerned with the well-being of the natural world." Sir David AttenboroughWildscreen Patron

Shining down

I don't know what this flower is called (Doug, are you out there?). It almost looked like a hanging light. For the first time, this year, some of the flowers are pink instead of blue. Later: this is a Himalayan Blue Poppy.

Golden paradise

A tiny part of the Reader Rock Garden, near the Stampede Grounds. As usual, I can't remember what kind of tree this is, but it has beautiful, peeling, curling bark. Looked most attractive with the golden leaves.
