A commercial establishment of some kind, probably a store. It doesn't look like a hotel--not enough windows around.

Considering the size and design of the windows, I'd guess a fairly fancy store -- not just daily provisions.

I wouldn't be surprised. What _is_ surprising is that the whole structure wasn't torn down for used brick decades ago, as happened in Aurora. Maybe it was just far enough away from southern California.

We actually don't have much red brick construction in California, though it might have been used as fill behind concrete surfaces. My guess would be that it was just far enough away from a paved road that it wasn't noticed.

Years ago, in one of the ghost town books, I remember reading that the used-brick craze started in SoCal, and that's what led to the demise of Aurora. Can't give any more detailed reference at this point, tho.

I'd completely forgotten about the used-brick craze, I was assuming the bricks were actually used for 'real' walls. Now that you mention that, it makes sense.

Even when I was a kid in the early 60s you could still get used-brick decoration. I didn't get it then, either! ;)
