Tarantula

Tarantula
In northern Nevada. Aphonopelma spp? A quick Web search indicates that the taxonomy of tarantulas is a mess. Anyway, this is probably a male seeking a mate.

Well taken. I recently took a shot of one of our spiders wandering aroundy and an internet search said the same - it seems the males go on a daylight search for mating females.

Thanks, everyone! Yeah, a spider this big pushes lots of buttons in the hindbrain-- In fact, tho, they're not aggressive and will only bite if severely provoked. The bite is also not dangerous unless you happen to be allergic. Some folks actually keep them as pets(!) Not my thing, admittedly.

Spiders don't normally bother me, but I'm glad these things are not found here in the UK!!

Yeah, they can be a bit disconcerting. In some places like southern Arizona you get tarantula migrations--_thousands_ of big spiders crossing the highway can be a bit freaky!
