The contrast isn't as great as it appears. The rocks are all Muddy Creek Formation, a geologically young basin-fill unit, and parts are better cemented than others. Before the dam was built, this butte was just the highest part of a cliff down to the river (I have a pic--not mine!--that was taken before the reservoir existed). Now the lake covers that cliff!

Thanks! Well, the reservoir probably has had the effect of highlighting the Temple. It's no longer just a bump on the top of the cliff.
