Probably not an issue today--

Probably not an issue today--
But it really _does_ snow here sometimes-- Near the southern end of the Saline Valley Road, right at the edge of Death Valley National Park, California.

I've always associated Death Valley with temperatures well over 100 degrees. And it snows?!

Wintertime dustings on the valley floor in D.V. itself are rare, but they happen. In the higher country around, however, you can get heavier falls. They don't last all winter, but they can block the road for a while--a few days or a week. And the Panamint Mtns, the high range that forms the west bulwark of Death Valley (high point Telescope Peak, elevation >11K ft) is snowcapped in the winter! At the north end of this road, where it's higher than here, I drove thru snow squalls last May.

I've read that in general the climate of North America is more extreme than Europe because the mountain ranges generally run north-south rather than east-west. As they say in the Great Plains, nothing between you and the Arctic Circle but a barbed-wire fence! ;)
