August Kindermann by Unknown
August Kindermann (1817-1891); German bass-baritone.
In 1836 he began his career as a choir singer at the “Berliner Hofoper”. In 1837 he made his debut as a soloist in Spontini’s “Agnese di Hohenstaufen”. From 1839-1846 he was engaged at the “Opernhaus von Leipzig”. In 1840 he performed the title role of Hans Sachs in Lortzing’s eponymous opera and in 1842 he created the role of Count von Eberbach at the première of Lortzing’s “Der Wildschütz”. In 1846 he was engaged at the “Hofoper von München”; an engagement that lasted over 40 years. In 1869 he created the role of Wotan in Wagner’s “Das Rheingold”. In 1882 –at the “Festspielen von Bayreuth”- he created the role of Titurel in Wagner’s “Parsifal”. In 1887 he became a Honorary Member of the Munich Hofoper and in 1889 he retired from the stage.
Four of his children also had an important singing career: Maria Kindermann at the “Hoftheater von Kassel”, Franziska Kindermann at Munich, August Kindermann Jr. at the “Hoftheater von Weimar” and Hedwig Reicher-Kindermann (1853-1883) who acquired the greatest fame but died very young.
