Edouard Gassier (1820-1872); French bass-baritone.
In 1845 he made his debut at the Opéra Comique in the première of Auber’s “La Barcarolle” as the Count de Fiesque. In the following years he performed in Italy ( Palermo, Milan and Venice), Spain and Austria (Vienna). In 1854 he was engaged in Paris at the Théâtre-Italien. Here he performed in 1854 the role of Ferrando in the French première of Verdi’s “Il Trovatore”. In 1856 he made his London debut at the Drury Lane Theatre. Until 1870 he returned every season to London, where he was held in high regard. At Her Majesty’s Theatre he created the role of Mephisto in the English première of Gounod’s “Faust” (1863), the role of Falstaff in the English première of Nicola’s “Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor” (1864) and the role of Fra Melitone in the English première of Verdi’s “La forza del destino” (1867). In 1861 he also sang at the English première of Verdi’s “Un ballo in maschera” at the Lyceum Theatre London. In 1848 he married the Spanish soprano Josefa Fernández (1821-1866) .
On the photo he is seen as as Don Giovanni in Mozart’s eponymous opera.
