Louise Liebhardt by Barrable

Louise Liebhardt by Barrable
Louise Liebhardt (1828-1899); Austrian/Hungarian soprano. Against the will of her parents she took part in performances at her home town under a pseudonym. She was so successful that she went to Vienna and became a pupil of the singing teacher Gentiluomo. In 1845 she made her debut at Vienna and in 1846 she was engaged at the “Wiener Hofoper” were she stayed until 1864 (with the exception of the 1849/50 season when she was at Cassel). In Vienna she was admired for her coloratura roles like Queen of the Night in “Der Zauberflöte”, Susanna in “Le nozze di Figaro”, Zerline in “Don Giovanni” , Alice in “Robert le diable” and Marie in “La fille du regiment”. In 1864 she went to London and in 1865 she made a tour through England, Scotland and Ireland. Although she performed in London both at Her Majesty’s Theatre and at Covent Garden, she was mainly known in England as a concert singer. At the end of the 1870s she retired and settled in London as a highly valued singing teacher.
