If you have not been on a submarine, it is worth a visit to appreciate just how cramped the conditions are or, at least, were on older vessels such as HMS Alliance. In spite of these conditions, smoking on board was allowed with the permission of the captain and was, of course, far more common in society at large during Alliance's service years 1947-1973.

Alliance reopened today after a substantial refurbishment which included the dressing of the interior to represent operational conditions. This is a detail from one of my shots of the mess areas.
