January 2020 Record Warmth New York Metro Region

January 2020 Record Warmth New York Metro Region
Mamaroneck, New Rochelle, and Bronx, NY

The 2019-2020 autumn-winter season resulted in anomalous blooms for Forsythia and Periwinkles -- Mamaroneck and Larchmont, NY, respectively on 27 September 2019 (record early for the New York City metro region. Other observations include a blooming Weglia Red Prince Bush (record early 28 September 2019), purple violets (record early 4 October 2017) and scattered apple blossoms (record early 14 October 2019) -- the former two in Mamaroneck, NY and the latter in Larchmont, NY. Quince also bloomed in Central Park, NY (record early 7 October 2019).

On 11 and 12 January, 2020 the temperature rose to record highs of 69 and 68 degrees Fahrenheit, respectively. With only a few short bursts of cold weather, vegetables such as cabbage, kale, and thyme continued to grow while frogs and turtles, both cold-blooded amphibians have yet to hibernate and now have been present for a record late length into meteorological and seasonal winter. Their habits may perhaps be changing because of climate change such that one day they may no longer hibernate, vegetables (that include cabbage, curly kale, thyme, Swiss chard, have continued to grow through the duration of meteorological winter (1 December 2019-29 February 2020) in the metro NY area) will experience extended growing seasons and plants such as forsythia may experience double blooms every year.

Also of note, many chipmunks did not go into hibernation for the duration of meteorological winter with sightings at the New York Botanical Garden, Bronx, NY (12 January 2020), in Mamaroneck, NY (January and February 2020) and in Greenwich, CT (15 February 2020).

Adonis blossoms were present as of 8 February 2020 at the New York Botanical Garden, Bronx, NY while crocuses also began emerging on this same date in Mamaroneck, NY. Japanese apricot blossoms and irises were present by 17 and 23 February 2020, respectively at the New York Botanical Garden, Bronx, NY and daffodils were present by 22 February 2020 in Rye, NY. In addition, marsh marigolds began blooming in Larchmont, NY on 23 February 2020 and a primrose plant which had bloomed through 12 January 2020 in Mamaroneck, NY produced additional flowers that began to bloom on 24 February 2020. Hyacinths were present in Mamaroneck, NY as of 27 February 2020 followed by viburnum at the New York Botanical Garden, Bronx, NY on 29 February 2020.

Top. l.-r: Pansy (Mamaroneck, NY - Jan. 11, 2020), Cabbage and Curly Kale (New Rochelle, NY - Jan. 12, 2020); Middle l.-r.: Camellia, Frog, Bee (New York Botanical Garden, Bronx, NY - Jan. 12, 2020); Bottom l.-r.: Turtle (Bronx Zoo, Bronx, NY - Jan. 12, 2020), Mahonia (New York Botanical Garden, Bronx, NY - Jan. 12, 2020) and Viburnum lantana (Bronx Zoo, Bronx, NY - Jan. 12, 2020)

Excellent reportage William...thought equally, disconcerting! I have heard from so many people through Ipernity and also through news sites of the mild northern winter overall, and of the abnormal heat in parts of the Southern Hemisphere. And of course, after prolonged droughts and record high temperatures we have apocalyptic fires here in Australia.
The earth is struggling.

Thank you Malik, Lee & Luv, Andy and Ron! Of course the USA isn't alone since China and India play a big role too. Hope one day the world will be serious and the same, consistent standards will placed on every country since after all we do live on one planet and no country is detached from the world. You're right Andy but hopefully the turtles and frogs will be able to hibernate in time.

Excellent collage and very interesting information, William.
Water shortages and drought conditions in many provinces have seriously affected rice-growing areas in Thailand. More problems will be expected this coming dry season.

It's a great and yet scary documentary, William! We can only hope that the animals will not fall victim to late frosts. The consequences would be incalculable.

William Sutherland club has replied to * ઇઉ * club
I'm confident the frogs and turtles will be okay. It will be like late October or November when the cold weather arrives and they'll go into hibernation. From my observations since the 2006-07 anomalous winter here and blooming dogwoods in November, December and January plants and animals appear to have the necessary resilience to survive.

Yes ! The climate is changing. Also here in Europe. Nature starts to early with blooming and growing. No rain in the summer, no snow in the winter. It’s a little bit scaring, isn‘t it ?!

Beautiful collage and images, William. How worrying though, to read of unseasonal warmth throughout the wintery northern hemisphere, while we have recorded successive record yearly national high temperatures. The climate emergency is here and too many national governments (including yours and mine) continue to produce excuses for doing nothing.
William Sutherland club has replied to tiabunna club
I agree. Both of our governments' lack courage when efforts should be made to focus on clean energy -- solar, wind, thermal and hydrogen to name a few. Aside from energy, people will also be a lot healthier too.

si, c'è da preoccuparsi seriamente !
William Sutherland club has replied to Heidiho club
Sadly he and others deny the reality and no one in the world has the courage to call for consistent requirements such as transitioning to clean energy for each and every country. Unless there is unity and consistent standards without exception, I doubt the efforts of a few countries, though noble, will work. I've been documenting it since 2006-07 and such anomalous events during meteorological winter have now become so common that they may even be considered normal up here in the northern hemisphere.

A lovely collage William and that sweet little frog deserves centre stage. Excellent notes and it is a serious situation. My son and his partner had a couple of rescued baby hedgehogs to raise prior to release when they were big enough. However the weather has been so mild they showed no signs of hibernating. I hope they are doing well now.
William Sutherland club has replied to Ecobird club
I hope they are and hopefully if it gets cold they'll be able to hibernate without a problem. Scarcity of food could be a real problem if they don't hibernate.

Thank you William. At the local school's request they have been released in an area of their grounds With advice they will be monitored so hopefully will have a good start. Also the pupils will get an insight into conservation and protection of our wildlife.

Well recorded William. I saw on the news last night that a certain Mr T is still denying climate change. I find all of the above pictures so interesting.
William Sutherland club has replied to Rosalyn Hilborne club
I can respect if someone wants to debate how much of a role humans are playing in climate change since there is an abundance of historical evidence this phenomena has occurred before, but to deny it is ignorance. While rare occurrences of winter blooms and anomalous fauna have occurred once in a rare instance, since 2006-07 it is now quite common -- too common to deny climate change.

I agree Claus-Peter. The first time I personally documented such occurrences was 2006-2007 and they were considered "anomalous." I'm not sure they can really be considered "anomalous" anymore since it seems like every year something like that happens such that one can only consider them increasingly "common." Climate change is clearly a reality and Europe perfectly illustrated this fact yet again this past January along with the New York metro area even if the temperatures were a bit cooler. Thank you!
