Lion at Night

Lion at Night
Taken during our safari at Kruger National Park, South Africa.

Near the end of the first day, the driver took us around to see some animals in the dark. He used a spotlight to illuminate them, which probably caused some irritation...

There was a pride of lions in the grass nearby, and his spotlight caught this lion quite close to us.

(The lions are over-lit, but there are now some possibly dangerous shadows. Who else is in the grass, waiting for a Sunday Challenge?)

I used the Panasonic GX85 with a long telephoto lens, and processed with GIMP.

Thanks for the kind comment.

I was taking pictures as fast as I could. When post-processing, I saw this one, and that pretty much was the only shot from our encounter that looked good. That's the way it is with wildlife (and children, I am told). Glad you liked it.

Great night shot, surely lions don't enjoy spotlights but without them... no photo !

I don't know what they think of a "bright light" that appears when it should otherwise be dark night. They aren't completely asleep, since lions hunt primarily at night. We saw plenty of lions sleeping during the day.

The safari guide was quite liberal with his spotlight, but most of the photos didn't turn out well. Things happen quickly in these situations. One example: we were driving down the road in the dark, and suddenly had to stop right in front of a huge elephant and buddies. We had to wait for them to walk by, before moving on. No photo op.

Must be quite an experience. I assume you were driven in closed cabins?

Riding in open safari vehicle; think very large Jeep. We were told to keep our hands and arms INSIDE, so animals would not recognize us as either food or threat.

The eyes of the main lion are hypnotics, and the other lion shows how effective the camouflage is.
