A Little Bit of Soap
High school friends, The Jarmels (Nathaniel Ruff, Paul Burnett, Ray Smith, Earl Christian and Tom Eldridge) were first to record "A Little Bit of Soap" (B. Russell) in 1961. This version is my personal favourite. The single peaked at number twelve for the one-hit-wonders..
In 1966 Artie Butler conducted and arranged The Exciters (Carolyn Johnson, Lillian Walker, Brenda Reid and husband Herb Rooney), "A Little Bit of Soap" (Bert Russell) for composer Bert Berns Productions. This reached the top sixty.
The Paul Davis 1970 cover of "A Little Bit of Soap" (Bert R. Berns) was his first hit and was recorded at Muscle Shoals, issued on the same Bang label as The Exciters release. The composer's widow Ilene Berns signed Paul to the label. The tune only hit number fifty-two on Billboard but in Canada it peaked in the top ten, in Australia the top twenty. This is from the album "A Little Bit of Paul Davis". According to Wikipedia "Many of his songs, including his best known hits, are owned by Paul McCartney through his MPL Publishing company".
Well known session musician and one time drummer for Elton John and Uriah Heep, Nigel Olsson's rendition of "A Little Bit of Soap" made the top forty in 1979. This track is from his album "Nigel".
