Medieval (Gothic) Remnants, Edited Version, Prague, CZ, 2013

Medieval (Gothic) Remnants, Edited Version, Prague, CZ, 2013
A number of buildings in Prague are older than they look, this one being a case in point. During the Baroque period (roughly 1600-1725), many older Prague buildings were rebuilt with Baroque facades (basically new outer walls that covered older details). Another characteristic of Czech Baroque was that pastel-colored paint was preferred over bare stone or mortar, sometimes with mortar over the stonework or brickwork to smooth the sides of the buildings (this was standard in Germanic countries, too, which wasn't a coincidence as Bohemia was widely considered such at the time). As a result, a number of medieval buildings were covered over and their histories forgotten until restoration work was done in the 20th Century, then a number of discoveries were made. The most famous example was the House of the Stone Bell, which was stripped of its Baroque facades during restoration and never returned to its Baroque condition. This building, however, I know far less about. It may be a familiar building seen from a side that I don't recognize, but in Prague the medieval neighborhoods are so cramped that it's a bit difficult to navigate them. In any case, you can see here how two gothic arches have been exposed under the Baroque facade.
