Crikey ! What a fascinating photograph Elaine, leaves the viewer thinking of many scenarios of why or how the bike became abandoned.
Just noticed there is also a trinket attached to the tree behind, Any explanation for the area?.

I'm assuming the bike was fished out the River Esk just to the left of the photograph. The bed of the Esk is reddy brown colour due to an industrial past (paper mill) so the bike is that colour too. There is both a North and South Esk which meet at the end of the country park and run to the sea at Musselburgh. I spend lot of time at the estuary too.

The tree in the background appeared to be a memorial to someone but I have no idea why. Flowers have also been left at the base of the tree.
