It's not a kids' flick, despite the animation!

No! Too bad the kids' mothers didn't know that. Dropping a bunch of kids off to see that Disney film just didn't work out!

My father liked classical music and managed to introduce us to it in a way that made it interesting, but I don't think that was a 'normal' experience of it.

I don't think so, not for American kids, anyway! I had slight experience with it, via my mother's small record collection. I appreciated it, but with the exception of The Nutcracker Suite I didn't feel especially passionate about it.

It was the Esquire theater opened in 1940, converted into performing arts center that opened in 1989. It looks like it might have had some interesting art deco detail that got somewhat 'remodeled'. Some interesting links:

Thanks for that, Don! The last one shows it in the original white, which is so much prettier to my eye. I'll have to go look to see whether that barrel-shaped decoration on the street corner is still there. For awhile it was a "community lounge" and, I take it, was a place for travelers or transients to gather, get some job information and take showers.

I agree, that brown/beige makes it look like they're trying to hide its past!

Well, most of the town is beige. Or, more accurately, a sort of Band-Aid color.
