The Klamath Parthenon

The Klamath Parthenon
Athena doesn't live here, but we've got an old log.

Steve Bucknell, , Blue rubber octopus, polytropos and 4 other people have particularly liked this photo

Well, dead is dead, doesn't matter if it's a goddess or a log ;-)
But at Perthenon the temple is old and the goddess was young. Here the temple is young and the log is old ;-)
21'500 kg is quite heavy! But what means 8'460 bd.ft? (especially bd)

A board foot is actually a measure of volume. By definition, a board foot is one square foot, one inch thick.

To calculate board footage use the following formulas:

Board Footage =
width in inches x length in feet x thickness in inches
12
- or -
width in inches x length in inches x thickness in inches
144

Thank you for the thorough answer, Sylvain! It's also the measurement used when a lumber yard prices the lumber, for instance to quote a price-per-bd-ft to a builder for common 2"x4" boards. Then, there are the grades of lumber: clear pine would cost more per bd ft than lower grade with knots in it.

A celebration of tree cutting seems odd these days, but there its probably a statement of frustration at all of the 'guberment' regulations.

The log has been there for about five-six decades, pre-frustration. There is and always was hostility toward government of any kind. One of my uncles was a nasty old ultra-right wing table-pounder, member of the John Birch Soc., and generally impossible to like. His son was worse. My dad's branch ignored the others.

The best story about an Oregon logging family is Ken Kesey's Sometimes a Great Notion.

And if the gummint _really_ was helpful they'd vote the trees back into the ground! /snark

Somehow, I don't think this gubmint wants trees at all.

You are the Log Lady of Klamath or Diane, the goddess of the hunt. Perhaps both. Let this be your shrine.

Good idea! I'm tired of being a goddess. The Log Lady must have it bronzed! That will catch the sun just beautifully. Thank you, Steve.

Do Kim Novak and Jimmy Stewart ever come there?

Not that I know of. I'm not sure what you mean, but they did have a scene in front of a big tree. Vertigo? ;-)

Thank you, Smiley!

That's it! It is never just a cut down tree, it is a timeline through centuries.
