What's new?

What's new?
My father's name was Harold. When I was a child, I saw the name of the local newspaper and thought, "They spelled his name wrong!" I guess it was a couple of years later that I figured it out.

Smiley Derleth, kiiti, Ronald Losure and 2 other people have particularly liked this photo

I do think his mother misspelled it! The Norwegian spelling is Harald, so Harold must be the old English version. I didn't find Herald as a proper noun, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist somewhere.

Oh look! There's a tubby virgin!

It's not quite as imposing as it looks here. It's part of a retaining wall that runs beside the drive to the buildings. Behind the buildings there is one even higher that holds up an even higher hill. Good thing it's not a landslide-prone area.

Yes! It seems likely that newspapers will continue to decline, as readers and advertisers go online more and more. It 's interesting, though, that books are still going strong! It's just the bookstores that have disappeared. I so miss browsing in a good bookstore.

re: name spelling -- there is someone in our family / down in an in-law side with that exact name spelling -- first time I met him .. just thought nobody in his family could spell !
But, it has been that way for years -- so, guess they knew what they were doing!

Hmmm, well, I think they just didn't know the spelling for the proper noun. Maybe they got it from "Hark the herald angels sing..." Or something... That's another thing that puzzled me in childhood before I knew what 'herald' meant!
