Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks. Who are they, I wondered, so: "The Elks had modest beginnings in 1868 as a social club for minstrel show performers, called the "Jolly Corks".[1] It was established as a private club to elude New York City laws governing the opening hours of public taverns. After the death of a member left his wife and children without income, the club took up additional service roles, rituals and a new name. Desiring to adopt "a readily identifiable creature of stature, indigenous to America," fifteen members voted 8–7 in favor of the elk above the buffalo.[6] Early members were mostly from theatrical performing troupes in New York City. It has since evolved into a major American fraternal, charitable, and service order with more than a million members, both men and women, throughout the United States and the former territories of the Philippines and the Panama Canal.[7]" en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benevolent_and_Protective_Order_of_Elks) I don't have any doubt that the "Jolly Corks" blackened their faces with burnt cork, thus becoming a Black-face Minstrel Show. Naturally, no real Black people would have been allowed in the Elks.

Babe Ruth

At Kiger Stadium. The Babe Ruth League has different divisions for youth aged 4-20. For a small-town baseball stadium like Kiger in Klamath Falls, hosting their World Series was a once-in-a-lifetime event. See this album for photos of the stadium: www.ipernity.com/doc/1227338/album/872948?view=0 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Babe_Ruth_League

Earthquake in the detergent aisle

29 May 2017 9 24 306
If this was a big supermarket, instead of Bi-Mart, there would be 4x more brands available for laundry detergent. A Russian friend of mine told me about her first days in the US after immigration (1990s). When she went to a supermarket, she could barely function for the sheer scale of the building and all the choices for each product. "It was like a museum!" I asked her how she was able to choose just one thing and she said by whether or not she liked the picture on the label. Later, after she learned English, she got much better at understanding what she was buying. Since then, I think about her almost every time I'm in a cereal aisle. Years later, I tended to do the same thing when I was in Japan, because it was often the only way I had a clue what was inside the package. That's how it goes when the written words are entirely incomprehensible. ;-b

Die Krups ist tot!

R.I.P., Krups. It was 18 years old and finally wore itself out. I was traumatized! It took months to find one that made coffee as well as this one AND that didn't cost too much. I'm happy again!

It's been sitting there for years. See PiP for closeup of the baffling sign.

Someone actually drove through this convenience store window. Plywood went up and this sign was painted over it. It's a lot more interesting than new glass. You can see the cracked stucco of the wall on the lower right. I added the "Free ice cream" to the blank sign.
