It reminds me of Ballard’s opening line from his High-Rise:

“Later, as he sat on his balcony eating the dog, Dr Robert Laing reflected on the unusual events that had taken place within this huge apartment building during the previous three months.”

Oy, I've already had my dinner, thank goodness! I quickly read a synopsis of High-Rise, with some references to his other work, and Ballard sounds somewhat like a Japanese novelist to me. Oh, maybe not... Thank you, Steve.

Superb surrealistic shot !!
Never read High Rise by Ballard : I read only his Empire of the Sun which was later turned into a movie by S.Spielberg.

So thanks to this image of yours I went and read a synopsis in the web... well, at the moment not for me at all ..in my next life maybe..:-)
Ciao Diane!

I saw Empire of the Sun, also, and loved it. But, real life now is so distressing that I am not in the mood to read High-Rise or anything else by Ballard. Last year I read a very dark, psychotic Japanese novel (Coin Locker Babies) and by the end I was exhausted and disturbed. Not at all amazed and fascinated by it like I might have been 30 years ago. I thought, "I am just too old for this kind of story!"

My theory is that because I spend more time alone than ever, I am less able to recover from feeling "exhausted and disturbed." All I have to do is turn on the news, see the latest governmental atrocity and that is more than enough for me!

Thank you, Bea.
