Forest of giants

Forest of giants
There is a woman standing behind the white road sign on the left (you can barely see her leg), which will give you an idea of scale. This portion of the California Redwoods contains a few of the largest trees. There are even more further south in Humboldt County. The forest floor there is even more lush than in the other locations in Santa Cruz and Del Norte counties, perhaps there is more wet drizzle there. I have been to the redwoods many times in my life and it comes very close to a spiritual experience.

Wow, they are huge! The ones in Germany were all planted in the 19th century and are still babies;-)

Haha - yes, they are babies and I didn't know you had some! Where are they?

We have quite a number in our zoological-botanical garden and single trees all over Baden-Württemberg. A Württemberg king in the 19th century got someone to bring him seeds from the States and he got more seedlings than he could use so he gave them away:-)

Interesting! Maybe I can find photos online.

Edit: Wow, it turns out there are a lot of them around Europe. Here is a map: www.monumentaltrees.com/en/deu-giantsequoia

They seem to have been quite the rage in the 19th century! Obviously the seeds the Württemberg king ordered produced 5000 seedlings alone and a considerable amount was sold to rich people all over Baden-Württemberg who planted them in their gardens.

Ah, the rich man's tree in Europe. Just think, they were free in California if you had a shovel!
