Gah! I hate it when I take a picture against the sun just because it looks interesting in real life!

Later...softened overall and cropped some sky...

It's the sky that bugs me. I reduced the contrast there, it helped a little. Any suggestions?

Well, you can't do much about the strong contrast between foreground and sky. Exposing the sky correctly would have given you a far too dark foreground, so the way you did it was a much better choice. I don't know whether your camera does RAW, that would give you a bit more scope. Or add an ND-Filter (NIK-Filter can do that) which darkens the sky.
But honestly the sky doesn't bother me the way it is!

No, my camera doesn't do RAW. It's really nothing more than a point-and-shoot with some added features that can mimic DSLR, but I don't really know much about them. All editing is done after downloading, as there isn't a built in editor.

Well, this worked well. All sorts of interesting bands with great detail.

I'd say it works. Strong backlighting can need extensive post-processing. Some newer cameras provide a setting for HDR though, so if yours has it that would be worth a try (set to underexpose first).

Nope, no HDR on my camera. Probably has "underexpose," but all of that takes multiple menu steps to access, so I don't bother. I am not nearly as interested in the machinery (OK, not at all) as I am in just taking a shot and editing later. I'm convinced that comes from my painting background.

Thank you again, tiabunna!

... eye-catching structures (those repeating fenceposts !!) ... the foreground is nice ... graytone/B&W, I think the lighting is appropriate to the shot; a certain starkness ...

... (there are a half dozen or so local shots that I've thought: I'll come back when the sun is in the other half of the sky ... nah, rarely happens ... just fiddle with the camera and take the shot ... )
