I'd say it works. Strong backlighting can need extensive post-processing. Some newer cameras provide a setting for HDR though, so if yours has it that would be worth a try (set to underexpose first).

Nope, no HDR on my camera. Probably has "underexpose," but all of that takes multiple menu steps to access, so I don't bother. I am not nearly as interested in the machinery (OK, not at all) as I am in just taking a shot and editing later. I'm convinced that comes from my painting background.

... eye-catching structures (those repeating fenceposts !!) ... the foreground is nice ... graytone/B&W, I think the lighting is appropriate to the shot; a certain starkness ...

... (there are a half dozen or so local shots that I've thought: I'll come back when the sun is in the other half of the sky ... nah, rarely happens ... just fiddle with the camera and take the shot ... )
