Up to the Bone-Caves

Up to the Bone-Caves
After clambering up the dry river for a mile or so, we begin to see our destination. You can just see on here, rising to the right our steep path to the caves that can just be made out. The frequent gust are fearsome and the air is wet but we will get there. See PiP showing our view back down the valley and Eileen clinging on for life.

"The Bone Caves are a series of natural caves set into a high limestone cliff called Creag nan Uamh (Crag of the Caves). The caves are named for the large numbers of animal bones found during excavations.
There are four main cave openings in the cliffs, formed before the last ice age by water dissolving limestone in cracks in the surrounding rock. Subsequent glacial action and erosion of the glen by water left the caves hundreds of feet above the valley floor."

Thanks Roger. I was very happy that the sun did in fact come out for a few seconds here to light up those limestone cliffs and crags. As you say, a marvelous area with only the wind and deer for company.

Have a great week. Herb

It's a beautiful rugged location and your wife did very well while you were photographing her Herb ;-)) Two superb shots my friend.

Sunday greetings and good new week,
Rosa.

Eileen had other words for 'Rugged' here, Rosa. She thought her time had come, but it all ended up fine after a rest in the caves and a chance to get out of our wet-legs. Her relief was palpable on learning that the way back down was by an easier route heading first further up the valley.

Sunday greetings to you too. Herb

That's what I would call a wild landscape................and a tough hike! I'm really impressed that you and Eileen made it up there Herb, especially after looking at the PiP.

I like the composition here...........and the grey sky works well with the grey rocks and boulders. The detail you've captured is superb and I like the muted colour palette.

Glad you made it down safely too..!!

Yep, one of the furthest into the wilderness that we had hiked on this trip. Most places were not too far from the road but this ..well you can see of course. A good 4-5 mile round trip here but we had also completed a 3-4 mile round trip in the morning around Little Assynt and those small lakes as well. I am lucky, that I can still get to walk such places without too much difficulty but Eileen prefers flatter easier routes. That being said she does like the wilderness too and it was she who routed this for us. Deer aplenty around here.
Glad you liked my compositions and the very Scottish colours.

Enjoy the rest of the day. Herb

Great images of this wild landscape, they justify the walk in bad conditions.

Good to see this fascinating area. I seem to remember the caves being featured in one of Paul Murton’s Grand Tours
