Devils Bridge, Kirkby Lonsdale

Devils Bridge, Kirkby Lonsdale
A visit to this wonderful small town brings us down to the banks of the River Lune. Here we see not only the old bridge, which now only takes walkers, but also the rather attractive road bridge set in the background. This is in the county of Cumbria and also said to be the Lower lake District. See PiPs

“Spanning the River Lune to the south and east of Kirkby Lonsdale is Devil’s Bridge. This magnificent three-arched bridge, probably dates from the 12th or 13th century. ~ The bridge was later ascribed to the Devil. The story grew that the Devil appeared to an old woman and promised to build a bridge in exchange for the first soul to cross it. The woman agreed, so the Devil built the bridge. The clever old woman then threw a loaf of bread over the bridge and her dog chased it.”

Always good to have your approval Rosa. The PiPs, although meriting full blown postings, just completed the picture I think. My thanks to you.

Ah yes, like when I see many of yours from a place that I too have visited and I think to myself, why did I not see that object from this position. My thanks.

Very well composed Herb..........I love the juxtaposition of the two bridges, both of which are beautiful in their own ways and the rocks make great foreground interest. Some lush greenery and lovely light as well.

A lovely story too................

I like both the PiPs as well and have commented separately.

It was a fantastic place, equally as good from both sides and so it just depended on the time of day and weather to which was best. Yes, all very green at this time of year, with it being both warm and wet on this day. Cheers for looking in on all three.

I only just notices the cap stones dont match up , what a contrast to the new bridge I will take the old bridge.

Aye, I think the old bridge has had a few running repairs over the years. The new bridge looks much better than most modern bridges I think. Glad you enjoyed this one though.

We drove over the bridge (going South) the day before in a heavy rain shower. After a week of dry weather the rain was quite a surprise. It was so heavy at Kirkby Lonsdale that we changed our minds and didn’t stop at Booths Supermarket as planned carrying on South. Kirkby Lonsdale has been a regular stop for us over many decades. The town is quite attractive and this river area is lovely.

Hi Colin. so glad that you know this bridge and setting too. Aye, the weather can be very unpredictable over there. We drove up here from Oldham on the 3rd through driving rain too so I presume you mean that. We know that supermarket too after visiting it. Yes agreed, the town is attractive and although we were technically in it twice, it still felt a bit rushed for us.

Keep safe. Herb
