San Domenico Church

La chiesa di San Domenico è un edificio di culto in stile romanico parte di un monastero del XIII secolo situato nella centralissima Piazza Vittorio Veneto della città di Matera.
Fu costruita insieme al convento a partire dal 1230 in stile romanico pugliese. Molto bello il rosone con intorno quattro figure a rilievo raffiguranti un telamone, due figurine ai lati, ed in alto l'Arcangelo Michele. Al centro del rosone un cane con la fiaccola in bocca, simbolo dei domenicani. L'interno, a tre navate con altari laterali e con una cupola emisferica a cassettoni, è stato rimodernato nel 1774; fra le opere conservate all'interno c'è la Crocifissione con san Domenico, realizzata dal Pietrafesa nel 1653.

The church of San Domenico is a Romanesque building of worship, part of a 13th century monastery located in the central Piazza Vittorio Veneto in the city of Matera.
It was built together with the convent from 1230 in Apulian Romanesque style. Very beautiful is the rose window with around four figures in relief representing a telamon, two figurines on the sides, and above the Archangel Michael. In the centre of the rose window there is a dog with a torch in its mouth, symbol of the Dominicans. The interior, with three naves with side altars and a hemispherical coffered dome, was renovated in 1774, among the works preserved inside there is the Crucifixion with St. Dominic, made by Pietrafesa in 1653.
