Basilica di San Nicola with marriage

La Basilica che custodisce le reliquie di S. Nicola si erge imponente nella Città Vecchia di Bari, a cinque minuti dal Porto marittimo e a 15 minuti dalla Stazione ferroviaria. Lo stile è il romanico, conferisce a questo maestoso esempio di arte romanica pugliese aspetto massiccio e sobrio, caratteristico dell’architettura normanna.
E’ una chiesa edificata sull’area della residenza del catepano (il governatore greco-bizantino dell’Italia Meridionale tra il 968 ed il 1071) e quindi con consistente riutilizzo di materiale del precedente edificio. Ecco perché anche valenti studiosi non hanno trovato un accordo sulle fasi di costruzione.
L’abate benedettino Elia (+ 1105) demoliva gran parte del palazzo del catepano ed alcuni edifici ecclesiastici minori, avviando così la maestosa costruzione. A lui va attribuita dunque la struttura muraria, alquanto approssimativa (lato nord più lungo del lato sud di circa due metri), e lo stupendo arredo scultoreo (Cattedra dell’abate Elia, Portale dei Leoni e capitelli del ciborio), il tutto rifinito dal suo successore, l’abate Eustazio (+ 1123).

The Basilica that houses the relics of St. Nicholas stands imposingly in the Old City of Bari, five minutes from the sea port and 15 minutes from the railway station. The style is Romanesque, giving this majestic example of Apulian Romanesque art a massive and sober appearance, characteristic of Norman architecture.
It is a church built on the area of the residence of the catepano (the Greek-Byzantine governor of Southern Italy between 968 and 1071) and therefore with substantial reuse of material from the previous building. The Benedictine abbot Elijah (+ 1105) demolished most of the palace of the catepan and some minor ecclesiastical buildings, thus starting the majestic construction. He is therefore responsible for the wall structure, rather approximate (north side longer than the south side of about two meters), and the beautiful sculptural furnishings (Chair of Abbot Elijah, Portal of Lions and capitals of the ciborium), all finished by his successor, Abbot Eustaceus (+ 1123).
