Fox squirrel

Fox squirrel
This species is common in some parts of North America. Where I live in northern Mississippi, they are rather uncommon and live in denser parts of the forest. Their color is quite variable, ranging from red (which gives them their name) to pure black. This individual has a black face, but is mostly red.

Thanks, Diane. They are common, maybe even abundant, east of the Rockies.

I don't think I have ever seen one before. Such unusual coloration.

This is the most common squirrel species in Michigan, but I never saw this color pattern there.
