Royal Naval X-craft. Aberlady Bay

Royal Naval X-craft. Aberlady Bay
Aberlady Bay , East Lothian has a number of remarkably little known historic wrecks including two midget submarines, Royal Naval X-craft.
In 1946 two X-Ts were moored on the vast expanse of sand at Aberlady as targets for aircraft gunnery practice.

Ch'an, brunosma, Wierd Folkersma, trester88 and 20 other people have particularly liked this photo

We're lucky to have visited here at low tide, Heidi. There are 2 x-craft in the bay, both of which are covered at high tide.

Rusty and encrusted this looks romantic now- target practice only for stray golf balls;-)

You have obviously been to this area, Gudrun. The golfers love it!
It does look romantic now, and such a lovely find. We purposely had a trek to find both mini submarines.

Very interesting, Amelia, to me it seems the skeleton of a whale :-)

Both submarines are a lot smaller than a whale, Dany, but they do resemble skeletons of some sea creature. ;-)

Interesting find and a lovely capture, nature reclaims or takes over quite quickly

Both of the wrecks are well-covered with barnacles and seaweed, Roger. I think that must be preventing them from falling apart!

The only x-Craft to have seen service and survive is the X24, and it can be seen at the Royal Navy Submarine Museum, Gosport, John. You may be able to visit it.

Photographing these midget subs has been on my bucket list for several years, Amelia. Maybe one day! Cheers, Joe

Check the tide timetables before you venture forth from Dumbarton, Joe, otherwise you could be disappointed. It's a nice wee dander across the bridge, through some woodland areas, past the golf course (it is Scotland after all), and then onto a wide expanse of beach. I really look forward to the results of your explorations. ;-)
Cheers, Amelia

Many thanks, William, for your lovely compliment. We made a special detour here to find two mini-subs. It was well worth it.

I think this was designed to sink or be sunk, Nick. It's hard to believe that these X-Craft carried up to 4 crew members isn't it?
