Arbroath Signal tower

Arbroath Signal tower
The Signal Tower is now a museum and was originally built in 1813 as a base of operations for the famous Bell Rock Lighthouse, the Signal Tower housed the families of the keepers stationed on the 'rock', along with the vital shore staff who ran the tender. The name Signal Tower comes from the ingenious signalling apparatus installed atop of the tower building that was used to communicate between the shore staff and the keepers of the lighthouse. An identical set of signalling apparatus is installed atop the lighthouse itself. Installed within the Signal Tower was a small observatory outfitted with a powerful telescope; it was through this telescope that the signalling apparatus on the lighthouse was monitored during the day. In an age before wireless communications, the ball system employed by the Bell Rock was seen as state of the art technology. At night, any fluctuation to the light would see the supply vessel set sail for the 'rock' to investigate.

The tower stands out well against the angry looking sky Amelia. An excellent shot and a YS! We are in Shrewsbury on the 10th December if you're around for a coffee! Cheers, Rosa.

Thank you, Rosa. I love a bit of cloud in the sky, especially with a white building in the foreground. We'll definitely meet up on the 10th. I'll send you my email address so that we can keep in touch. Look forward to that. :-)
Cheers, Amelia

What a great place, they made utilitarian buildings look beautiful then!

I to like this style of architecture, Gudrun, and this signal tower was well used in its time keeping contact with an off-shore lighthouse by the simplest of means. It would have been useless in foggy conditions of course.

Great shot with the white of the building contrasting well with the dark clouds. Interesting history also, adds a lot of interest. I remember being able to (just) see the Bell Rock Lighthouse from the East Sands at St. Andrews as a kid, a looong time ago.
Best regards, Doug

My Dad used to point out the Bell Rock lighthouse from the Eeast Sands in St.Andrews to me, Doug. I used to live there. What a coincidence! It was mainly the flashing light that we looked out for. It's possible to see the Bel; Rock if one takes a walk along the cliffs in Arbroath.

It does look as if it's going to rain, Christien, but in fact it stayed fine - if not a bit cloudy at times, and we had a good walk along the cliffs after this photo was taken.
Warm wishes, Amelia

We were going to visit the museum, Joe, but unfortunately it was closed on that day. I would definitely visit Arbroath again though, and walk further along the coastal cliffs, and have smokies for breakfast, lunch and the evening meal. LOL
Cheers, Amelia.

Wonderful shot of the buildings against that dark sky. With our technology so many of these lights are now just museums or worse, are allowed to fall to pieces.

Thank you, Ron. This building is very well looked after as are many of the lighthouses in the UK. The Bell Rock lighthouse off shore still has a very important part to play in the North Sea.
