The love of the bicycle in my life
from 1945 - 2022
"He who rides slowly - also reaches his destination".
Reflections on slowness

Since the end of the war in May 1945
I have loved cycling.
It accompanied me from my school days to my A-levels.
In 1948, after the currency reform
I got a new bicycle from the Göricke company.

The frame is still original.
This is how the bike looks today.
It is still ready to ride.

In the summer of 1955, 6 of us students
made a bicycle tour from Munich to Yugoslavia
from 14 August to 17 September

Yugoslavia 1955 - in Austria - Nieder Tauern Pass

We had to push for 4 hours.
Only one had gears.

In 1967 I made my 2nd big bicycle tour during my 2nd degree.
I already had a Peugeot sports bike with five-speed gears.
I cycled from Freiburg im Breisgau to Innsbruck.
Unfortunately, I don't have any photos of this trip.

The ebike came along.
2012 - at the age of 80, I bought an ebike from the Kalkhof company.

Enjoy cycling - multe da plezuro ĉe biciklado.

Riding was again easy and carefree.
But since 2017, age started to make itself felt.
I became unsteady when getting on and off the bike.

Again I was lucky
I wanted to buy a tricycle.
At the Dresden West Tricycle Centre
(just opened in June)
I went for a test ride.
Normally 1 wheel in the front 2 wheels in the back.
I didn't like it.
Disappointed, I wanted to leave,
when my son spotted a four-wheeler.
He took it for a test ride and handed it to me saying:
"Daddy, try this bike."
I was immediately satisfied - even thrilled.
Low entry - thanks to the '20 inch' wheels safe mounting and dismounting.
That was exactly what I wanted.

Now I have already made several rides with the four-wheeler.

My impression:

:The bike imperceptibly educates you to ride slowly.
I now ride relaxed in the range of 9 - 14 kmh.
I stop where I like a view.
I stop and get into a conversation with hikers.
They are all amazed.
"We haven't seen a bike like this before".
and congratulate me on the purchase.

Here are some impressions

Lavender in the Elbe valley

A long lavender hedge
Here I always stop to see and hear
the buzzing of many bees.

On Sunday, 31 July 2022
my daughter and her husband visited me.
They live in Reichenberg near Moritzburg.
They have a VW T6.
To my surprise and theirs, they noticed
that my four-wheel chair wheel fit crosswise into the T6 (1.42m).
They took me with them to Reichenberg.
From there I made small trips every day.
I also explored
the baroque castle Moritzburg with its beautiful surroundings

Nearby is the only lighthouse in Saxony

3km away from Reichenberg is the Dippelsdorfer Teich.
On the northern shore there is a hint to
the expressionist artist group 'Brücke

I am mobile again
and I am looking forward to many more rides.
Of course I also use the bike for shopping.
I don't need much more.

My motto.
"I am happy - to still be able to do what gives me pleasure".
