Back to the Ayrshire coast and Dunure Castle which is a dramatic ruined medieval fortress perched on a rocky promontory overlooking the Firth of Clyde on Scotland's west coast, in the village of Dunure, South Ayrshire. Notable events include: A 1429 diplomatic meeting between representatives of King James I and the Lord of the Isles. A three-day visit by Mary, Queen of Scots in 1563. The infamous 1570 "Roasting of the Commendator," where Gilbert Kennedy, 4th Earl of Cassilis, tortured Allan Stewart (Commendator of Crossraguel Abbey) over a fire in the castle's Black Vault to force him to sign over abbey lands. (grok) HBM and a good week,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Large view may be rewarding!

The Isle of Arran can just be seen on the horizon and across The Firth of Clyde! HBM and a nice week to all, Large view if possible please,

A section of the ruins at Dunure Castle,Ayrshire, Scotland, with a choice of benches and superb sea views across the Firth of Clyde to the Isle of Arran and the Kintyre Peninsula. The castle ruins have been stabilised and the public are free to explore from the dungeons upwards, In August 1563, Mary, Queen of Scots, visited the castle for three days during her third progress round the west of the country In 16.9 therefor a large view would probably be better.

Beach Space

The beach on South Bay at Saltcoats, which sits on the North Ayrshire coast of the Firth of Clyde opposite the Isle of Arran. In 16.9 format therfore a large view would be appreciated, HFF and a nice weekend! Saltcoats owes its name and its existence to the discovery here of easily worked coal deposits in the 1200s, when the monks of Kilwinning Abbey operated mines here. A common early use for coal extracted from coastal deposits was to provide the heat to evaporated sea water to produce salt, and the shores here rapidly became lined with sheds in which coal fires burned 24 hours per day under large pans of sea water. This must have been a pretty unpleasant place 800 years ago. www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/ardrossan/saltcoats/index.html
