Blue Bench with a view,

03 Aug 2025 33 48 324
A sunny North Sea and the small harbour at Staxigoe, located 2 miles east of Wick on the north-eastern coast of the former county of Caithness, The few boats that still work from the harbour fish mainly for Crab and Lobster, The unusual name is Norse and loosely translates to "inlet of the stack" A very slight deviation from the main road and missed by many dashing past on the way to John O'Groats and the "North Coast 500 route! Worth a look in large if the site will allow! HBM and a lovely week to all!

Tide Marks,

19 May 2025 15 15 239
The water marks on the harbour entrance walls show the huge tidal range at this part of the Bristol channel, a large view may show this better, Entry is not possible to the harbour in strong onshore winds. Be very aware that there is a tidal range of 10 metres at Springs and 5 metres, at Neaps, ( from Mariners notes) This is the second or third highest tidal range in the world! HWW! and nice second half of the week!

Waiting for the tide.

Porlock Weir , West Somerset, on the Bristol Channel Coast, where Exmoor meets the sea, Few takers for the seating as it is still February with a coastal chill in the air! HBM! May I suggest a large view for details!

Island Link!

12 Dec 2024 41 66 541
A sunny June afternoon As the Caledonian-McBrain (cal-mac) ferry "Loch Fyne" arrives at the mainland port of Mallaig, after a 30minute journey form Armadale on the Isle of Skye. "Loch Fyne" has a capicity of 200 passengers and 36 cars, Having driven The Road to the Isles from Fort William were waiting to drive aboard for a pleasant trip across the Sound of Sleat and a few days on the island! HFF and a great weekend!

Spires and Turbines.

14 Nov 2024 48 70 459
The town end of the large harbour at Girvan, South Ayshire, showing the trawler Argonaut on the shipyard slipway, and the RNLI lifeboat mooring center of image. The spire on the left is the North Parish Church and the right hand tower is Stumpy Jail, it was built in 1827. It has survived 2 World Wars and is still standing as a tribute to the craftsmanship of its Victorian Builders. In 16.9 format therefor a large view will probably be required for detail, HFF and a good weekend.

Misty Evening, (2 notes)

17 Sep 2024 34 51 643
Burnham Lower Light through the light mist of a September evening. Bridgwater Bay at Burnham on Sea with the lower lighthouse on the beach and the slipway used to launch rescue hovercraft and lifeboats during higher tides, These are launched from the beach at low tide. This is just a small part of the six mile (9.6km) beach between Burnham and Brean down ! Note 1, Brean Down is a promontory off the coast of Somerset, England, standing 318 feet high and extending 1+1⁄2 miles into the Bristol Channel Note 2, St Mary’s Church in Berrow, (known as the church of the dunes) HWW! ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,and a large view recommended!

Golden Sunset, HWW!

20 Aug 2024 47 76 511
The beach, the Sea wall and slipway across the harbour at Portpatrick, on a beautiful August evening. Portpatrick was the original port for the mail boats to Ireland, HWW! And a large view, perhaps.

Loch Caron

Stromferry Slipway, There is no ferry any more, however when a rockfall closed the A890 near Strathcarron Tunnel this was used to ferry cars and foot passenger across from Strome until the rocks were stabilised many weeks later. The vessel used was the boat from the Glenelg ferry during it closed season.

Sandside Harbour 2

22 Jul 2024 12 6 226
I have been unable to post the images intended for today North Coast 500 group, Instead, a series of three from one of the many attractive little harbours along the Caithness and Sutherland Coast, These are old images from Sandside harbour, Caithness

February Coastal

07 Mar 2024 46 81 407
A pleasant mid-February afternoon at Burnham on Sea on the Somerset coast, The low tide has emptied Bridgwater Bay leaving the sandy 7-mile beaches to the dog walkers and sand castle builders. The image also features Britain's shortest pier, built in 1911 at just 100ft (ca. 30 metres) long. Shot in 16.9 format, so a large view please,,,,,,, HFF and a great weekend to all!

Red Roofs,

15 Feb 2024 53 88 474
Calmac Ferry “Loch Strivan" waits for its turn to cross the harbour for the Oban ferry terminal before the afternoon run to the Isle of Lismore, St. Columba’s Cathedral is just behind the ferry, Image shot in 16.9 format, so a large view would be appreciated, HFF and a nice weekend!

Sea Wall,

13 Feb 2024 41 61 431
Bridgwater Bay and a gap in the Sea Wall allows access to the beach at Burnham on Sea. This wall was built in1988 as replacement to the previous storm damaged structure, The bay has the second-highest tidal range in the world, up to 36 feet (ca. 11 metres) and at very low tide the sea can recede 1.5 miles (2.41 km) , The curved waterway left of image is the mouth of the River Parrett. The lower lighthouse, in the distance, was built in 1832 and is a grade 2 listed structure, HWW and a large view please!

The County Flag!

16 Jan 2024 43 64 452
The flag of Somerset fluttering in a strong and cold winter breeze while being flown from the Harbour Wall at Minehead, Large for detail please, HWW!

Looking West

23 Jul 2023 61 76 667
A look across the Lynn of Lorne to the Island of Mull on a sunny May afternoon at Ganavan, Oban, HBM and a good week to all. I prefer the view large, HBM and a good week to all

Seil Sound and Narrows,

13 Jun 2023 46 54 492
On the left the Isle of Seil which is one of the Slate Islands* and across the fast flowing narrows is the mainland at Clachan. The short pier and slipway in the image foreground was I assume for the ferry which ran before a bridge was built in the late 18th century, This is now known as the Bridge over the Atlantic. *The Slate Islands are an island group in the Inner Hebrides, lying immediately off the west coast of Scotland, north of Jura and southwest of Oban. The main islands are Seil, Easdale, Luing, Shuna, Torsa and Belnahua. Slates quarried here were exported all over the world, HWW to one and all.

Harbour Mood.

10 Jun 2023 44 65 530
Sea mist arrived with the incoming tide to provide this mood at the harbour at Crail in Fife, Lobster baskets as seen in the image are called creels, so we have a creel at Crail. A large view will I'm sure be rewarding, HBM and a good week to all. Finally, a little relaxing piano music, Misty, www.youtube.com/watch?v=s-UjwvJ0eeA

Waters Edge

25 Feb 2023 33 36 370
Looks like a family outing to the coast for New Year, this is the slipway used by the emergency services, RNLI Lifeboats, the BARB rescue hovercraft and coastguard services, Bridgwater Bay, the River Parrett, and the coastline through to Weston super Mare can be treacherous to the unwary who can be caught out both by tidal speed and sinking sands. I prefer the image large

Freebird & pip

23 Feb 2022 44 61 478
The wooden trawler "Freebird" under extensive overhaul at Alexander Noble & Sons Limited, Girvan, Scotland, Unable to find any information on the trawler so she may have had a name change. The River in the foreground is "Girvan Water" and the image is taken form a pontoon adjacent to the Lifeboat Station. HFF and a good weekend to everyone. A large view may be better and see pip for a closer view.
