A decorated wall in Kashgar Old City …or a reconstruction of this ancient Silk Route city, in Xinjiang, western China. It has been made as a modern tourism site…the twisting lanes of the ancient mud brick city replaced by decorated walls in the new iteration. The artefacts on all the walls are local items of everyday utensils and items used by the original inhabitants, mostly old, at least.

Catering to modern tourism but it is still really colourful and attractive Diana. I love the baskets - they remind me of visiting an old man who was a basket maker going back to when I was a child. I watched him working and he made me a gondola basket which we had to go back to collect at a later date. He worked from a little place beside the river. Nothing mass produced, just a one man small business. It will always stick in my memory.
