Showing when the lighthouse was completed. Back in the 1800s, Australia was still a British colony with Queen Victoria on the throne. It seems to have been almost mandatory to add VR (Victoria Regina) to all manner of buildings at the time. This does show the excellent quality of the stonemasonry in the lighthouse: amazing to think it was all done on site, from quarrying to completion.

She certainly left her mark not only on the lighthouse but on history, whatever one may think of her.

Wow, that really is cool to think about. For me, my first impression was, "Cool design on the letter forms!" As a graphic designer, interlinking letters for a design is something pretty awesome when done right, so I was immediately impressed. To realize that the work was done right there (of course), it's just a bit amazing. Thanks for this detail shot to get me thinking about what it took to finish this lighthouse. Really something.
