Some excitement last night when we found this large moth. More images in the PiPs (the second taken with the new phone). I think it is a species of Hawk Moth, but Australia has 10,000 named moth species and, it's estimated, probably as many again that are un-named, so I won't try to be definitive. :-)

Your pictures are just WOOOOOOT!!! Lovely details on these fine macro shots, I esp love the one with it on your hand. Superb!

George, I would like to invite you to submit your pictures to Bug Guide's ID forum...you'll find out exactly which species this moth is...within as short as 10-15 minutes! There are lots of people who lurk there, just WAITING for someone to upload a new bug to identify...it's a kind of race to see who can id the critter the fastest! So, do them a favor and give these guys a new challenge!

(Because you're in AU, it may actually stump them, but that will just give them more incentive!) Upload your picture and then stand back so you don't get trampled! :D

Many thanks for your kind comment and suggestion to post the image on the bugguide.net site for a positive ID, Janet. I've had a look at the site and just wish we had something similar here! That said, they are quite clear that their site is confined to only the United States and Canada and I don't wish to upset the apple cart. I'm sure it's a Hawk Moth though, and I think that Benny (above) has it right as a Convolvulus Hawk-Moth (though mine is a shade darker than the one in the example, the patterns match).

Thanks everyone, for your kind comments and faves for these images. I must admit I hadn't realised myself there are so many moth species here - I will have to spend more effort looking for and at them. :-)

Wonderful close-up of this interesting moth. It is amazing that it landed and that you could take a close-up photo if it in your hand!
