View from the Cliff Railway ~ Scarborough

View from the Cliff Railway ~ Scarborough
Views from the Funicular Railway, going down.

The Scarborough South Cliff Tramway Co Ltd was created in 1873 to link the South Cliff Esplanade with the South Sands. When opened it was the first funicular in the UK. At first the lift used sea water as counterweight. Two gas engines (replaced by steam pumps in 1879) were installed to pump the sea water to the upper station to fill the top car (and also a bathing pool!). The water pipe was between the two parallel tracks. In 1997, the lift was modified to be completely automatic.

A fantastic bit of Victorian engineering beautifully presented! The second PiP shows the steep slope very well. It must have been fun using the funicular regularly:-)

I love a funicular railway Gudrun :-) My favourite is the Lynton & Lynmouth one which is 500ft (152m) above the lower station. I used this one in Scarborough many times. It was just £1 going down & £1.50 going up! Thank you for your kind comments.

An original and smart installation designed with a real refinement.
The main picture with its low light is pure beauty!
A nice contrast in the first PiP that projects us far on the coast. And the second PiP is very informative. It is good that this installation has been preserved and modernised.
Have a nice Sunday, Rosa!

Apparently there used to be five cliff railways in Scarborough, but I think only two remain now. I walked to the end of the road from our hotel before breakfast every morning to see this lovely view Eric. On one occasion I did walk up from the Promenade....it gave me a good appetite for dinner ;-)) Thank you for your kind comments.
Sunday greetings and wish you a good new week Eric.

A wonderful series from on high Rosa, like you, I love the cliff railway at Lynton, we walked the path beside the railway once, quite an experience.

Thank you Roger. I also walked it once when the queue was long....I expect I had the same experience as you!! :-)

I love the light and the shadows on the Spa in the main shot Rosa. The first PiP framing the scene over the Spa and South Bay is very nicely done. In the second PiP the perspective looking the tracks of the funicular is excellent, giving a good impression of the height involved. I love the pricing policy, obviously management calculated that tired holiday makers would be willing to pay extra to go UP after a long day on the beach!

Enjoy your day, Doug

I loved this view that was at the end of the road from our hotel Doug. We did have a laugh at the pricing...they knew what they were doing didn't they! ;-)) Thank you for your very kind comments.

Marvellous views from the funicular railway carriage, Rosa. We called in at Bridgnorth on the way back home from Wiltshire. There is a funicular here too, but the views are nowhere near as glorious.

Thank you Amelia. If you had come to my village from Stourhead, in 6 miles you would have been in three counties! There used to be 5 funiculars in Scarborough, but as far as I could see, there are just two now.

A great trio of shots here in this light Rosa reminding me of some of the continental cable car views going up and down mountains. It is good that we have a few of these preserved and still used. The last one I went on was at Saltburn but I have been on a few. Good that you enjoyed the ride and the walks too. Well done.

Cheers, Herb

Thank you very much Herb. I love a funicular :-) My youngest brother lived and worked in Saltburn for three years. I never visited him there as I had 2 young children at the time, but my mum and dad did and they loved it there. I have a photo of them using the funicular railway. They were also lucky with the weather on their visits and enjoyed a Victorian Fair there once.
Thanks for the link. I remember it well.
Cheers, Rosa.

The view in the main image is lovely..........you must have been up and about pretty early as there doesn't seem to be anyone else around. I do like a deserted beach :-)

A beautifully framed (no pun intended) view in the first PiP...........the beach and town look wonderful in the sunshine.

A super view looking down the railway in the second PiP..........they really are a marvel of engineering............and great value by the sound of it. I'm all for anything that saves me walking up and down hills nowadays :-)

A splendid collection Rosa!

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Keith Burton club
There were very few people on the beach all the time we were there Keith. Mostly dog walkers. I must say that it was kept very clean, in fact, the whole place was very clean and I didn't see any dog mess at all.

As you can imagine, I used the funicular quite a few times :-)) We walked back up once and that was enough....many seats were taken advantage of on the way up!

Thank you very much for your kind comments on the set Keith.

Hi Peter,
Thank you for your kind comments. Funiculars have always held a fascination to me ever since my gran took me on one in Bournemouth when I was about 8 or 9 years old. I bet you have been on the Lynton to Lynmouth one!?
All the best & happy new week,
Rosa.
