Lych Gate ~ Littlebredy Church.

Lych Gate ~ Littlebredy Church.
The Church of St Michael and All Angels. Many churches have a lych gate built over the main entrance to the church. The name, also spelt lich or lytch, is from the Anglo Saxon 'lich' meaning corpse. The gate marks the division between consecrated and unconsecrated ground, where the bearers sheltered with the coffin, waiting for the clergyman to lead the procession before the burial. The original lych gates had seats and a lych cross.

I've seen these gates before in quite a few churches in Sussex and locally. I had no idea what their significance was until I read your narrative..........which makes perfect sense.

They also make for great photos...........which you have clearly demonstrated with these two splendid shots!

They are interesting Keith and here is a link to one a few miles from me that has the seats either side of the gates www.ipernity.com/doc/rjh/45348572

Two super shots Rosa. I love these little lych gates. A number of country churchyards still have them and they look really pretty. My eldest daughter was christened at St Mary's Charlynch and that lych gate has seats inside the gate.

Have a lovely evening

That sounds lovely Carol. A lot of the old ones still have them. I remember doing a series on Panoramio, but I would have a hard job to find them all now. If Charlynch is not too far away from you now, it would be lovely to see a picture one day :-) Thank you for your kind comments.

Fascinating images and information, Rosa. I know of only one church with such a gate here and was unaware of the significance.

Thank you George. I imagine it was very handy on rainy days especially. It would be interesting to see the lych gate you know of, if you are ever in that location.

Hi Rosa
A very nice picture of the gate, and great information too. I have seen many of these gates, but never understood their purpose, so thank you for explaining!!
Best Wishes, a nice weekend, and stay safe!!

A fine pair of nicely framed pictures Rosa. Like many other I did not understand the purpose of the lych gate, thank you for the education! The main shot is really nice with the glimpse of the church through the gate and the surrounding lush foliage providing great depth. the second picture is very nicely framed with good control of the light/shadow. Well done.
All the best, Doug
