Tanners ~ Shrewsbury

Tanners ~ Shrewsbury
One from the archives, 2012. My daughter and I travelled to Shrewsbury for a long weekend having booked a guided tour of the locations used in Charles Dickens "A Christmas Carol" film of 1984, starring George C Scott, shot almost entirely in the town. It was so good that we booked it again in 2013! This picture was taken in Tanners Wines, where the public are not normally permitted and it is where Fezziwig's Ball took place. The tour ended at Ebenezer Scrooge's grave (PiP). It was also the first time I met Amelia :-)

De Kypers Cherry Brandy, a Christmas Favourite and I don't mind if I do. Now you have reminded me of it Rosalyn it will be on my Christmas list. I like the feel in this shot and of this place, perhaps brings back a bit of reality to this insane world.

I remember my parents having that in the house Maurice, and it only came out at Christmas! A few years after this visit, Tanners let us have a quick peek into the old parts again. A lovely place to visit if ever you are in Shrewsbury.

What a great still-life shot, Rosa. I love the warm, golden colour. Interesting that you mention Scrooge and Amelia in the same paragraph. LOL. Cheers, Joe

Beautiful warm light I like the funnels and the boots and the bottles and especially the till. Beautifully ornate ones like that were still around when I was young. The PiP is wonderful.

Beautiful light and a marvellous old cash register, though I suspect that is from a little after Dickens' time. Good to see Ebenezer's grave too. The meeting would have been a distinct bonus.

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to tiabunna club
I would guess late 1800's for the till George. Dickens died in 1870. Our guide was absolutely brilliant. He brought the story alive, but not Ebenezer ;-))

That sounds like a fantastic guided tour! I love this image, the golden light is just lovely and suits the period well. I love that old till and the bottles and funnels...........there's such a lot to look at and enjoy. A beautifully detailed capture!

I like the image in the PiP too.............did you leave flowers? :-))

Had our flu jabs today..........and then had a walk around Chichester in the sunshine. It started to rain on the drive home and we just made it indoors before it got too heavy. Have a good week Rosa:-)
Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Keith Burton club
It was a fantastic tour Keith. The guide was brilliant. He saw a lot of the filming so had a lot of anecdotes. When I heard an American was taking the lead role I was very unsure, but have to say George C Scott was brilliant. I didn't know until that tour that they left the grave of Scrooge, or might just have left a flower ;-))

Sunny in Chichester! Wow, lucky you ;-)) I have not been able yet to get a flu jab. Apparently they have run out! A lot of under 60's seem to be having them!
Hope you have a good week too.
Keith Burton club has replied to Rosalyn Hilborne club
Our amazing Government lowered the age at which people would be eligible for flue jabs on the NHS, but seem to have failed to realise they'd need a lot more supplies of vaccine! Can't say I'm surprised. We got ours from Boots........Jackie booked them a couple of months ago! Hope you manage to get yours soon.
Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Keith Burton club
I didn't know that until they told me in our local Boot's. I don't care if we have to pay for the jab but I can't even find anywhere local to do even that at the moment.
Keith Burton club has replied to Rosalyn Hilborne club
We've been using Boots for now and they're always pretty good. I'm sure other Chemists are doing flue jabs as well. I hope you find somewhere soon!

A Dickens tour - how wonderful! I just bought a fairly recent biography of Dickens. Haven't started it, yet. Great shot!
Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Diane Putnam club
He had a very interesting life Diane. I'm sure you'll enjoy it. When we were in Shrewsbury, we had a meal in the Hotel he stayed in when he appeared, doing readings, in their local theatre, which is now a museum. All the best.

Diane Putnam club has replied to Rosalyn Hilborne club
If you get a chance, I think you would enjoy the autobiography of Mark Twain (another one I admire very much), published in the late 1990s, I think. A very eventful life, too, and a remarkable person.

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Diane Putnam club
Yes I am sure I would enjoy that Diane. I will add it to my list of 'to read'. Thank you.

I can't wait for those days to come again Amelia. We were going to Durdle Door today, along the Jurassic coast, but there were so many people that we decided to go further along the coast to Ringstead Bay, where there were very few people and it was almost as nice :-)
