A walk in the Forest.

A walk in the Forest.
A lovely forest around King Alfred's Tower, where these pictures were taken. In the first PiP I was having trouble focusing on the leaf, maybe because the light was too strong, but this is how it came straight from the camera. Maybe you can have too much bokeh!! Let me know what you think. The second PiP is how I hoped it would look.

A very nice collection from the the forest Rosa. Both PiPs look fine to me. The light in those situations can be very tricky, I would certainly be happy enough with the results.

Thank you for your very kind comments Doug. I was getting annoyed with the camera on the first PiP....or maybe myself ;-))

All the best, Rosa.

Thank you Gudrun. It's strange, but I would probably have liked the first PiP more if someone else had taken it. Maybe too critical of my own picture.

I really like the main image Rosa.........the light coming through the canopy is beautiful and there are some nice dappled shadows.

I like the bokeh in the first PiP.......maybe you had trouble focusing because the light was too strong or the contrast between the subject and the background wasn't high enough. Getting closer and using manual focus would have helped I think, and maybe using a wider aperture.

I like the second PiP too. The light on the leaves is lovely.

Pleased you like the main shot Keith. I think you are right about the problems with the first PiP. I should have tried the shot from the opposite angle! I did try manual focus but as I don't use that much I wasn't getting good results. Not sure what I was doing wrong, but I got fed up and moved on. The second PiP is more to my liking as well.

Many thanks for your input and kind comments. Always appreciated.

I like he bokeh in the first PIP very much, whlist the second PP lacks the jewelled effect of the first. The main picture is very good too ~) That is my two pennys worth

Wonderful, Rosa!
You have captured the path veering gently left as an excellent counterpoint to the branches veering right and the light between them meshes everything together beautifully anchored by the perfectly positioned upright trunks!
The PiPs ain't half bad either!

A lovely place to walk on a sunny day, it will be nice in a few weeks as Autumn approaches, I know that type of bokeh is very popular but I don't like it when it picks up so many light sources to me it doesn't make the subject stand out it just confuses things, but of course that is just a personal preference. Regarding focus if you don't want to use manual my thoughts if it wouldn't focus move off the subject focus on some thing else settle down then try, you will have various focus option I tend to use centre spot, can you lock the focus by half pressing the shutter release and holding it while you compose the image before taking it. This focus refusing to lock on to the subject tends to happen when there is a big difference in light, the same thing happens with the moon

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Peter Castell club
I have never taken autumn pictures in this particular forest Peter, but I will this year.
I felt it was too much bokeh. I had hoped it would be gentler, but the strong sunlight was shining through, so I should have guessed. On aperture mode, it kept almost focusing and I tried to lock it but no luck there. Thank you for your helpful tips and kind comments.

I had hoped to focus better on the autumn leaf Jose, but gave up in the end. I will bear in mind all the useful tips. I have a little note book I take with me when out with the camera. I think I had better write them in there. The forest is around the tower in the previous picture. It's about 8 miles away. Thank you for your help and kind comments.

A lovely forest series, Rosa. Bokeh is very much a matter of personal preference. Some people like it 'creamy', at the other extreme is 'swirlly' and there are people buy vintage lenses for just that! Keith and Peter have given some good hints, but essentially (for a given lens) bokeh varies with distance and aperture. I don't know Nikons, but I would think you should be able to leave your exposure on aperture priority while setting the focus manually (in this case on the leaf ).

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to tiabunna club
Thank you for your kind comments George. I am taking note of everything that is said. I think I had better take a look at the camera handbook again. I know what you mean about bokeh. It is definitely too strong in my picture and the leaf is not sharp enough. I had better get some practice in!

Yu must have had a a very nice walk in such a beautiful forest, dear Rosa!
Non technical advice from me, sorry, I'm not good at it!
But I can tell you that even though there may be too much bokeh in the first pip, the three images make a delightful series...you feel you are in the forest, with its light, green shades and even smells!
Take care, dear friend.

It must be a lovely place to walk Rosa, cool and shady beneath the canopy of branches with that beautiful sunlight filtering through the leaves. An excellent series and I must admit I rather like the first PiP. The effect of the light that seems to burst with little pops of colour is very attractive.

Have a good weekend
