Newhaven town & country
Folder: Seaford, Bishopstone & Newhaven
Newhaven is a small ferry port on the south coast of England, about 10 miles east of Brighton. The port and ferry service are heavily subsidized by the French local authorities in Dieppe - at the other end of the four-hour ferry crossing. It has the potential to be a pleasant resort at the mouth of the Sussex Ouse. Much of its industry has now gone, but it always seems to miss out when redevelopme…

Newhaven high tide - Sussex Ouse - 9.10.2014
| |
|
The Ouse used to be navigable up as far as Lewes, but anything larger than a cabin cruiser can't get further than the incinerator - the building with the rounded roof and two tall exhaust stacks. The river runs between high clay banks most of the way to Lewes, with fields on either side, about 1 - 2 metres below the river bank top. On a day like this there is often seepage through the banks.

It is unusual to see this much of the lifeboat, when it's moored beside the RNLI station.

It wasn't the dog that made the puddle - it was the sea washing in from the marina, on the left of the photo.
Sand on East Beach - Newhaven - 7.3.2014
| |
|
|
The vast sweep of Seaford Bay's shore is formed of shingle, but right at its western end there is a small arc of sand at low tide. There are bits evident along the rest of the beach at very low tides but it is a fairly gritty sand on those areas.
Pilot boat - Pathfinder - Newhaven - 7.3.2014
| |
|
|
One of two second-hand pilot boats bought from Estuary Services Ramsgate in 2012. Pelorus was overhauled and put into service. Pathfinder remains in reserve, stored on East Quay alongside the scrap metal wharf.
You can see the Newhaven Port Authority's news item on the acquisitions at www.newhavenportauthority.co.uk/news-and-announcements/24-pilot-vessel-pelorus-is-launched-on-service.html
The pilot boats, that I assume replaced them, can be seen, back in 2005, at www.ipernity.com/doc/philsutters/26281435
The wreck Newhaven - 14.6.2014
| |
|
This was the last picture of this old ship in this condition. There were shots of it ablaze on the net recently, so I shall be interested to see what it looks like now, when I am in Newhaven tomorrow.
Later - I now see in the local paper that it was a controlled fire, that got a bit out of control! Demolition workers were clearing the wooden parts before cutting up the steel hull. Will it be gone tomorrow - doubt it. Six-year-old grandson will be upset. It was one of his favorite landmarks when we first moved here five years ago.

These were the seas that were pushing the tide up the Ouse Estuary, which starts at the foot of the cliffs to the right of this shot, and into Newhaven Harbour.

Splashy West Bay - Newhaven - 21.10.2014
| |
|
Although the bulk of the rounded space enclosed by the breakwater had a calm surface, there were obviously currents swirling around the curved seawall that met and created these bits of turbulence.
Ghosts aid tranquility? - Newhaven - 21.10.2014

I suppose as the pumpkins have well cared for skins and the qhosts' make-up has been done so well, they really aren't that frightening, so one's tranquility may not be put at risk, unless one is arachnophobic.

Spotlight on Newhaven - 14.10.2014
| |
|
|
Not just a spotlight - is that someone offering Newhaven a hand up? Newhaven has now secured a new engineering college, with an emphasis on marine engineering, and a role as the support base for the off-shore Rampion wind farm. The local industrial estates also look much more lively recently, so perhaps someone really has given the town a hand-up.

Big Pipes - West Bay - Newhaven - 21.10.2014

|
This is a blown-up section of a wider shot, enlarged for the rust enthusiasts, hence its rather fuzzier look. I didn't go over to see if the notice board had anything about the tubes on it. In the past drilling rigs have been assembled in this area.
