The Ouse valley from Newhaven to Lewes - 25.6.2012

Newhaven town & country

Folder: Seaford, Bishopstone & Newhaven
Newhaven is a small ferry port on the south coast of England, about 10 miles east of Brighton. The port and ferry service are heavily subsidized by the French local authorities in Dieppe - at the other end of the four-hour ferry crossing. It has the potential to be a pleasant resort at the mouth of the Sussex Ouse. Much of its industry has now gone, but it always seems to miss out when redevelopme…  (read more)

Lifeboat & trawler at jetty - Newhaven - 29.10.201…

Now was this an emergency or an exercise? The weekends are a good time for the latter, especially for lifeboat volunteers and retained firemen, who wouldn't have to rush away from their jobs - assuming they don't work at weekends. 3.11.2011 - Thanks to the South Coast Leader (newspaper) we now know that William Mary snagged its nets on the bottom 21 miles out to sea. There was a fire in the engine room and one crew member had burns to his hands. The lifeboat was called out at 5.16am on Saturday. The fire was extinguished and the nets recovered. The lifeboat then towed the trawler back to port, arriving at about 11.30am.

The ferry is going astern leaving the port. Only in bad weather do they make the tricky manoeuvre of turning through 180 degrees in the harbour, to exit bow first.

Another experiment - poster edges and saturation this time!

Newhaven North Quay industrial - a bit grungy

An experiment with downloaded brushes. Maybe it looks as though I should clean my lens a bit more often.

A second go at the subject - this time a fake sunset - sorry 'faux sunset'!

Can anyone identify the vessel on the right - 273? It looks naval from the deck down, but the superstructure is new.

The state of this seawall is the reason that the company that runs the harbour, heavily subsidized by the French local authorities at the other end of the ferry route, has barred the local population from the West Beach. Although they have had the beach declared their village green, the barriers still remain. 17.2.2014 I wonder what state it is in now after last Friday's storm. I must take a wander down there soon.

The Fl ashing R ed 5s econd light in the little bay window to the right, is a navigational aid on the west side of Newhaven Harbour entrance. It seems a bit quirky to put it in a rail mounted cabin - a bit like a retired bathing machine!

West Beach bounty hunters - Newhaven - 30.1.2014

I don't know what they were probing the sand for, so my caption is a bit vague/quirky. They certainly weren't metal detectorists, their prey was probably shell-fish of some sort. It could also have been lugworms which are used by anglers as bait. I like the patchwork effect of the ripples as the tide creeps in. William Mary & Magnus Musson at Newhaven - 30.1.20…

The trawler appeared to have some power and seemed, viewed from a distance, to berth herself on arrival in harbour. The Magnus Musson is a semi-retired pilot boat, there being two newer and more advanced vessels now on duty.

Magnus Musson is a semi-retired pilot boat, there being two more modern boats at the Newhaven Port Authority's disposal. She has been retained as a general work boat. The William Mary appeared to still have some power and, from a distant view, seemed to berth herself once in harbour. This is not the first time I have caught NN729 needing help getting home - www.ipernity.com/doc/364457/25933561 The trawler in the background is the Sarah Lena.
