Looking out to sea

Selsey Sign 1

16 Oct 2020 135
A visit to the Sussex coast and the first thing I encountered was this quirky signpost. The polariser was in full effect.

Selsey Sign 2

At the other end of my stroll along the beach at Selsey, I found a similar signpost offering good advice this time.

One sunflower

Sunflower bokeh

31 Aug 2020 143
After some depth-of-field pictures, I decided to experiment with some full-on bokeh. Bokeh is a Japanese word meaning "blur"; some interpretations seem to me to be simply use of depth-of-field, whereas others are pretty much just blur, with only a hint at the actual image. I think I've gone beyond even that, but I kind of like it all the same.

Sunflower

Just one of the thousands of sunflowers in the field near Loxwood.

A field of sunflowers

31 Aug 2020 1 82
Unexpected find on a walk around the Sussex village of Loxwood earlier today - a field full of sunflowers.

Magnolia Burst

21 Jul 2020 2 5 80
Thought I'd play around with a bit of zoom burst. It's not perfect by any means, but it's kind of growing on me. Looking up at the magnolia, if it's not clear.

Grass Feathers

St Marthas North side

05 Jul 2020 85
St Martha's Church (also known as St Martha-on-the-Hill) sits isolated on a sandy hill-top. It is the only church in Surrey situated on the Pilgrims Way. It is listed Grade II, rebuilt in 1848-50 out of the ruins of a 12th century church, of which some features remain.

The Path to St Marthas

05 Jul 2020 2 5 126
The church sits on the Greensand Ridge a few miles from Guildford and is only accessible on foot (the North Downs Way long distance path goes right past). The path up to the church door is the colour it is because the whole hill-top is completely sandy, just like a beach.

Firle Tower

Built in 1819 as a game-keepers lodge. It is Grade-2 listed

The Dock, Firle

19 Jun 2020 1 1 61
I returned to Firle village from Firle Park along a street named "The Dock", which could almost be somewhere in Central France.

X X S (H)

Tie rods (which have several other names), are used to stabilise the external walls of older buildings. They are usually given a bit of decoration: here we have two X-shapes and an S. The H is the fire hydrant.

Beddingham Hill

I walked up the track to South Downs Way at the top of Beddingham Hill. Behind me are the radio masts on top of the hill.

Firle Church and the Downs

19 Jun 2020 69
Firle is a private estate in the South Downs near Lewes, with an ancient church at its heart.

The View West

19 Jun 2020 2 74
The aerials are at Beddingham Hill (where I joined the South Downs Way) and beyond that, the view goes on to Devils Dyke and further (perhaps as far as Chanctonbury Ring?)
