Yellow swallowtail

This is, specifically, the Canadian tiger swallowtail butterfly. I think I have never seen the so-called Eastern tiger swallowtail, certainly not this far North. But this one is a regular visitor around our house. There is another swallowtail here but it is less frequently seen, and it is more largely black than this one. Thus, locally, many people — like me for one — call this one the Yellow swallowtail in contrast to the other, the Black swallowtail.

That's a nice butterfly picture! It appears to be a male specimen. I wonder if that black one you're seeing occasionally could be the rare black form female Tiger Swallowtail. It's not very prolific around here, (where I see the Eastern Tiger Swallowtails), and only the females have the black form.

I think the Tiger Swallowtails are one of the prettiest butterflies.

:)I am not well-versed enough to know anything about their gender. But the “black swallowtail” I was referring to here, in Newfoundland, is Papilio brevicauda. If I remember correctly, elsewhere the name “Black swallowtail” is used for a different species. I expect you know more about all that than I do!
