I love the contrast in shapes between the irregular form of the sculpture and the straightness of the building, John. All the best, Joe

Thanks, Joe. You've just pointed out to me the role public art plays in Toronto -- it's a relief from the boxy buildings. I'm not a fan of this sculpture, or of another half a block away, but they do relieve the rectangularity.

There's something very impersonal about this one. The city of the future, maybe? I don't know whether to read the sculpture as anguished or threatening, or both. And the buildings are imperturbable.

I saw it as threatening, Bob, but I guess the Royal Bank and its gold-impregnated windows probably wouldn't blink an eye, if they had any.

Hmm. The battle between commerce and creativity. Of course, the sculpture was paid for by corporate interests. The myth of the battle between commerce and creativity then. Art -- the banks' gift to YOU!

Intriguing juxtaposition of shapes and angles, light and shade.

As I mentioned to Joe, Andy, relieving the boredom of all the rectangular buildings in downtown Toronto is probably one of the chief functions of public art there.

Such a striking contrast between these two structures.........although both look superb against the blue sky.

Thanks, Keith. There have been two types of contrast mantiones so far: contrasts is shapes and contrasts in signification, for want of a better word. My reaction to this was initially that it seemed sinister, so I'm happy to see all the interpretations here.

Maybe I watched too many horror movies when I was young.

This was taken from the southwest corner of York St. and Front St, W., Esther, looking east on Front. Have a good trip. I look forward to any photos you can post of it.

You caught the contrast between the clean straight lines of the house and the twists and turns of the sculpture very well.
