Reykjavik 1944

Reykjavik 1944
Uploaded for the Vintage Photos Theme Park weekly theme of Cities.

My uncle bought this postcard in 1944. Since Canadian troops had left Iceland in 1941 I don't know why he was there. I suppose if I'd asked he would have had to kill me.The gothic tower in back is part of the Cathedral of Christ the King. The park was then the home of the Cabinet Office, which is now the Prime Minister's Office.

The neighbourhood is much changed today. The street on the left with the statue on one side and the octagonal building on the other seems to have been re-aligned, the statue is now pretty much where the octagonal building was, and the octagonal building is across the street.

As you can see by exploring this view:

I had the same impression, Denis, even though there are some big buildings in the photo.

A contemporary shot from exactly the same spot would be even better, too. I did find one taken from the steps of the Prime Minister's Office but it was taken from a bot lower down the hill.

The changes were a bit unnerving, too. The changes in the street layout made the two views seem to me as if they were from alternative universes..

Great to see that photo John. I am familiar with the more modern day setting.

It looks quite the bustling part of town now, David, compared to 1944. But then the old photo may have been taken on Sunday morning, which was a common practice at one time. And there was a war on, I suppose -- wouldn't want any shots of military vehicles, I suppose.

I see you have a couple of shots from across the street in your Iceland bus album. Very interesting.
