Nothing wrong with your photograph; I couldn't pass however without remarking how very unappealing this place is. Having read some of Bill Bryson, I ought not be shocked. But this is bad. I do not wish to visit.

No one comes to the Falls to see this corner, TLC. They go to Niagara Parkway. There you'll find the Falls, Thousand Buddhas Stupa, and a drive north along the stunning Niagara Gorge through well-managed parkland to the Brock Monument and the beautiful view from there. And then you can go on to Niagara-on-the-Lake. And you will notice that everyone is smiling. And that's not all!

Bill Bryson spent ten years -- ten years! -- living three miles -- three miles! -- from Wymondham Abbey in Norfolk and then announced in The Road to Little Dribbling that there was "bugger all" in Wymondham. That's how reliable he is.

If you've never been to Wymondham, the Ninian Comper rood screen in the Abbey makes the trip worthwhile all by itself. And that's not all!

Bill Bryson is an ass.
I do like this image, it feels like an outpost in some country-western song or noir movie where a guy out of luck just got shot by his lady and is left behind to lick his wounds and sing the blues ...

He certainly was in The Road to Little Dribbling, Sarah. I don't know what possessed him, unless he had gambling debts that had to be paid off promptly if you know what I mean and he decided just to write off the top of his head to get the job done.

Yes, this reminded me of a lot of the outdoor footage in D.O.A. and Panic in the Streets, except that the shots in D.O.A. usually featured Edmond O'Brien running around like a middle-distance runner in a suit. The scene in which he runs down Market Street in SF was shot without a permit, by the way, but you probably knew that.

We actually watched D.O.A. not that long ago (meaning: probably less than two years), My memory being the sieve it is these days I barely remember any of it.
The noble pursuit of shooting without a permit (also known as guerilla shooting) has been practiced by low-budget movies for as long as movies have existed. In my Hollywood days, it was something of a dare among my friends what they could get away with. And nowadays, with movies being shot on iphones, the permit business must have shriveled down to a puddle.

They're all shot in Canada these days, anyway, Sarah. Of all the movies I've watched in my long life the only one I have any substantial memory of is The Best Years of Our Lives. I was going to add Lou Costello and Sidney Fields doing the "Niagara Falls" sketch, but that's from TV.

Indeed, it' s not a beauty place, but I think the visit of the falls is a wonderful adventure. HFF, have a fine weekend, John !

Thanks, Percy, and the same to you. I should have mentioned to TLC that the American side has a terrific park, too.

Thanks, José. Blue skies are forecast, but weather in the Great Lakes often refuses to co-operate with the forecast. Blus skies to you, too.

Well, I've been to the Canadian side of the falls............and the experience was absolutely mind blowing..!!

This a not a good advert for the falls, but it isn't meant to be. It is however, a decent fence image on a typical out-of-town industrial estate which fulfills the HFF brief perfectly.

Bill Bryson writes very amusing books but I'm not sure I'd plan my holiday itinerary based on them :-))

HFF John.................have a splendid weekend..!!

Thanks, Keith. I liked Bryson's Neither Here nor There and Notes from a Small Island, but The Road to Little Dribbling was a disappointment, cranky and misanthropic. Maybe the formula got to be too much for him; he was betrayed by his editors, anyway.

And a splendid weekend to you.

All that's happened since this was taken in 2012, Denis, is that the visitor centre is now a chain submarine sandwich shop.

That motel looks mighty inviting. What's with the visitor's Center? Some sort of rack or modern flying buttresses on top...

I think that structure must have been intended for giant billboards, Diane. They still only have two small ones, though,
