Fun at the Falls

Fun at the Falls
The percentage of people smiling is very high at Niagara Falls, at least on the Canadian side. The American side is more upscale. I once watched a show on the Buffalo PBS station about how Niagara Falls, New York, was trying to figure out how to get as many tourists as Niagara Falls, Ontario without being as crass and vulgar.

There are a lot of happy people at Niagara-on-the-Lake, though, which is definitely not crass and vulgar.

This is the Canadian Falls, according to Canadians, or the Horseshoe Falls, according to everyone else. It is in fact shared by Canada and the US (we get most of it, though).

This is terrific, John. I love the expressions of the two on the left: both enjoyment and discomfort at one and the same time. The lack of colour (apart from the Canadian flag) adds to the charm of the picture.

Thanks, Old Owl. Now that you mention it, the combination of enjoyment and discomfort seems to be an important part of the experience. It shocks you out of the everyday. Thanks for mentioning that.

And one brave guy who doesn't bother with his hood. It was just two years ago when we were here in our raincoats, me trying to keep my camera dry! And yes, we did stay on the Canadian side several nights.

It's a beautiful part of the world. I haven't been to upstate New York for many years, but I know several people who consider it one of the most beautiful places they've been, The Canadian side is attractive, too, especially the Niagara Falls municipal park system along the gorge and the Brock Monument at Niagara-on-the-Lake. Some very attractive views there.

John, I'll be driving from Buffalo to St Catherines later this week. I'm afraid I'll be seeing mostly conference rooms and the like, but the drives there and back should be interesting. And Monday I'll be cooling my heels at a motel and the airport, since I turn the car back in Sunday and don't fly out until late afternoon.

The old parts of St. Catharines are very pretty (haven't seen much of the new parts). Buffalo, of course, has major architecture and major cultural institutions. Both have parks by Frederick Law Olmsted: Montebello Park in St. Catharines and an entire park system designed by Olmsted and his partner Calvert Vaux in Buffalo. His Buffalo parks are considerably more impressive; the St. Catharines one features a surprisingly minimalist 1904 bandstand, though. I hope you have a chance to explore a bit.

The only thing that could have improved this is if just one of the people had been wearing a purple plastic mac - just sayin' !

HFF John!

Thanks, Robert. That may be the only thing that Nigara Falls, Ontario, doesn't have.

Wow...................I did this years ago (early 80's), we also went on a boat called the "Maid of the Mist" (I think). It was a fantastic experience. Thanks for sharing this wonderful candid image John.

HFF to you and have a super weekend.

Thanks for sharing that Berny. Unfortunately when I was there I didn't have a camera - it would be nearly 20 years before I got interested in photography :-(

Love your description. Imagine - anything American trying not to be as crass and vulgar as anything Canadian! Superb shot, too.

Of course, a big attraction of Ontario border towns is the ballet, Diane. That's the name Americans give to Ontario strip clubs, which apparently are somewhat more liberal than the ones in the States.

Thanks, Sarah. I should get down to the Falls again, at least. I was going to post more photos from there, but apparently my technical standards were lower in 2012. An overlooked site in the Falls is Thousand Buddhas Stupa. I had what I had thought was a good shot of it but today it just is too poorly defined for me.

It is my doubt about visiting such overcrowded spots: what will be more important, to see for true what I saw in films and photos that shows places without tourists or to avoid the inconvenience of being like sardines in a can?
Next month I will be visiting the natural parks between Vegas and Frisco, what includes spots like Horseshoebend and Antelope canyon... I am not so excited because what I see and what I read is to state both are overcrowded...

I recommend Northern Ontario, Xata. This is an official administrative division of Ontario. Its area is about the same as the areas of France and the UK combined, but its population is under 800,000, so imagine France and the UK covered in dense forest. It has over 200 provincial parks and one national one. A little research would tell you which ones are most to your liking, Of course it's on Hudson Bay, too, and there are lodges, guided canoeing trips, etc.

Southern Ontario has its unspoiled spots, too. It's about the size of England but with only a quarter of the population, and half of that in Toronto.

Tourism Ontario should be paying me.
