Toronto-Dominion Centre, Toronto

Toronto-Dominion Centre, Toronto
The Toronto-Dominion Centre is the world headquarters of TD Bank. It has two towers (far left and far right) and a banking pavilion (the short building on the left) by Mies and two more in his style Through the trees, first from the right, you get a glimpse of Scott Tan de Bibiana's contribution, which deviates a bit from Mies to accommodate the old Art Deco stock exchange. Mies's three buildings were his last major work.

The bronze cow at bottom right is one of seven by Joe Fafard constituting an installation called The Pasture. It and the lawn it's on provide an alternative to the severity of Mies's design. At lunchtime the lawn is covered not only with office workers having lunch but also with families who have brought picnics.

The building across the street behind the banking pavilion is Commerce Court West, by Pei Cobb Fried and Partners, Behind it is Commerce Court North by York and Sawyer. They're part of the headquarters of the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC).

The architects of record for the TD Centre are John B. Parkin and Associates and Bregman + Hamann.

Fred Fouarge, Andy Rodker, William Sutherland, Ruebenkraut have particularly liked this photo

With all the notable architecture, the whole shot has an inviting, springlike green feeling to it. Are there any places to buy ice cream or a newspaper anywhere close? Green space doesn't automatically attract people, as this seems to - there has to be a reason to come here, and not to flee to an area with more amenities at lunchtime.

There's a retail concourse in the basement of the TD Centre, Bob. It's fully designed by Mies, too -- perhaps the most austere part of the 20 km of tunnels that link many of the main buildings downtown. Around noon the slittle square is quite sunny This was taken in earky afternoon, but there was still enough sun at the southern end (to the right) for people to be sunning themselves.

Lovely to see a bit of the countryside being brought into the town John. It's amazing how a bit of grass and a few trees transform the place.

I agree, Keith. The cows strike a whimsical note, too, that contrasts well with the building. People really like the cows. They disappeared when the aquare was being renovated a few years ago and people were worried they'd never come back. So the site manager set them up across the street until the work was finished and they could be moved back.

Thanks for providing all the details. Glad the cows made a comeback.

You're welcome, Sarah. Toronto feels a lot better now the cows are back, too.
