Looking up the Chimneys

Looking up the Chimneys
A day on the Marloes peninsula - 7
Pembrokeshire, west Wales.

The cliffs at Marloes Sands are illuminated by the late afternoon sun. Vertically bedded Silurian sediments include prominent beds of brown-weathering sandstone, three of which form the well known Three Chimneys visible here.

An apt name for this geological formation.

Thanks, Amelia! I'm never quite sure whether the name refers to the orange-brown sandstone beds, or the dark clefts in between (as in rock climbers' terminology). I suspect it is the former though.
